Northish is a game about pointing at places. It needs to know roughly where you are to work, but it never stores where you are, never sells anything about you, and works without an account.
Your location
When you play, your phone shares its location so the game can work out the direction to each place. It is rounded to about 1 km and used on your phone only. It is never sent to our servers and never stored. If you don't share it, you can pick the nearest city instead.
Your phone's compass
Motion and compass readings are used on your phone to tell which way you're pointing. They never leave your phone.
Your scores
Your rounds, streak and best score are saved on your phone. So they survive your browser clearing its storage, a copy is backed up on our servers under a random code kept in a cookie. That backup holds scores and place names only, nothing that identifies you or where you are. A backup nobody has used for 400 days is deleted automatically.
Accounts (optional)
You can sign in with Apple or Google to keep your scores on more than one device. If you do, we keep the account ID Apple or Google gives us, plus the email address and first name they share (with Apple you can hide your email). We use these only to sync your scores and to show you which account you're signed in with. You can sign out or delete your account at any time from the game; deleting it removes the account and its synced scores from our servers.
Usage statistics
To make the game better, we count anonymous events: that a round started or finished, how many degrees off an answer was, which screens were opened, the kind of device and browser. They are tied to a random ID, not to you or your account, and we turn off location lookup by IP address. These counts are processed by PostHog, our analytics provider. Nothing is collected if your browser sends a "Do Not Track" or Global Privacy Control signal. There is no advertising and no session recording.
Cookies
Northish sets one first-party cookie, used for the score backup and, if you sign in, to keep you signed in. There are no advertising or third-party tracking cookies.
Who handles your data
- Google Cloud / Firebase (United States): hosts the game and stores score backups and accounts.
- PostHog (United States): receives the anonymous usage statistics.
- Apple and Google: only if you choose to sign in with them.
We never sell or share your data with anyone else.
Children
Northish is a general-audience game and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from them; the game itself needs none.
Your choices
- Play without an account, and without sharing location by picking a city.
- Delete your account from the game (Sign in · Delete account).
- Clear the game's data from your browser's site settings.
- Ask us anything, or ask for your data to be deleted: mauriiromano123@gmail.com.
